In Studio Seattle Maternity Photography

There are days when I feel strong as a woman, a wife, a mother, a family photographer, but then there are days when I feel something more. Those are the days when I feel empowered. Recently, I met a soon-to-be-mother who inspired and empowered me. She exuded strength and courage. I felt stronger, more capable, and more inspired just by being in her presence.

Maternity photography is an awesome opportunity to witness life literally transforming people into a new being we call parents. It’s a transformation unlike any other. Your entire world is turned upside down in all of the best and worst ways one can imagine. Like most things in life, the outcome ultimately lies within your perspective. My most recent client had the most refreshing outlook. She drew strength from her body’s ability to create life, to grow this child within her womb. Her fulfillment with her partner and their unwavering support for one another was refreshing and beautiful. Her smile came across her face easily, but there was power behind it. I could not help but be moved by simply being in her presence. She reminded me of one of my favorite artists, Brooke Shaden . Much like my client, she is strong, inspiring, powerful, and recently said goodbye to her extremely long hair.

What is it with us women and our hair? It’s nothing new; hair has had cultural and religious roots (har, har, har) for as long as we can tell. A bad hair day can destroy our mood just as a good hair day can build us up. Why do we let our hair have so much influence on us? I’m sure there’s doctoral theses written on the topic, but what I do know is how to change it. Much like Brooke Shaden, my client took control of her hair, her body, and cut it all off. She felt powerful enough that she no longer needed it. What else do we hide behind, or find our identity in that we can shed to find our true strength?

I cannot thank this mama in waiting enough for being brave and allowing me to take some creative liberties. I’m beyond thrilled with the results that were captured in my Seattle photography studio. I hope you enjoy this photographic journey as much I have.
