Seattle Family Photographer | And playful Kiddos!
I am sure I have mentioned from time to time the absurdity of toddlers (well, anyone age eight and younger) posing for photographs. Posing a munchkin. The entire concept is a myth.
You actually see people selling tutorials entitled “Ways to Pose a Toddler!” They can’t possibly have children.
One reason I got into photography was to release families from the white and khaki outfits posing stiffly on a beach. This is not real life. When a family looks back at those photos, will anyone think, “Jane, you were such an energetic spirit!”? No, they won’t. Why? Because Jane was in the throws of multiple temper tantrums (rightfully so) after being forced to pose and do things she can’t possibly grasp at her wondrous age of three. This is why I am a huge advocate for what I lovingly call Toddler Led Photography.
Toddler Led Photography is working within the confines of a toddler’s understanding, ability, body awareness and attention span as well as encouraging them to be themselves. There is no pressure for the child when your photographer is flexible. Get your standard, ‘Grandma will love it’ poses when you can. In between, encourage play and curiosity. Let’s work together to make the experience fun for your child.
The difference is tangible. When a family hangs a portrait from a Toddler Led Photography session, they will laugh and say,”Jane, look at you! You love to jump, play and are a huge ham!”
Twenty years from now, when Jane has children of her own, she can look back and see her children in portraits of her childhood. It is real, it is genuine and it is my favorite kind of photography.
