Family Photographer Spills on the Joys of Moving
I don’t know about you, but I hate moving.
I have a lot of experience with moving. As someone who has never lived in the same house for more than 3 years, I can say with confidence that I hate it. Thankfully, I am really good at moving and living out of plastic Rubbermaid containers, but Lord do I hate it. I try to talk it up like a ‘purging’ opportunity and a chance to ‘start over’ in a new clean place. But really, I don’t like it one bit.
Moving is hard. It’s especially difficult as a kid and I’m not sure it gets any better as an adult. Nobody likes being the new kid.
Moving to Seattle is a little extra hard in my personal opinion. In my home state of Arizona, people are a little more chatty. They say hi and bye with ease. People make plans with others and keep them. Everyone is always having a pool party or BBQ, so there were always places to be and people to see. Here you walk into a coffee shop (that place where people used to go to socialize with something other than their phone) and everyone is silent with a New York sense of urgency look on their faces. If you dare greet them with a hello, they look at you like, “Aww, aren’t you socially awkward,” and give a soft smile followed by an eyebrow raise like they are forgiving you for something. So as you can imagine, making friends in Seattle is hard. Then sprinkle a little extra difficulty of being a mom. Yikes! I would not wish that on anyone.
When I take a hard look at my life in Seattle, I realize all the friends I have made here are from Illinois, Florida, Arizona, California, and Texas… I get them, and they get me.
So when I meet folks who say to me, “We just moved here.” I want to hug them and tell them everything is going to be okay. I am here for you and there are so many more transplants out there. It will get easier and it DOES NOT RAIN AS MUCH AS THEY SAY. (Whew. Glad I got that off my chest.)
This is one of the most beautiful places to live and for every transplant that arrives, it gets more beautiful.
