A Mother is Born

The day a child is born is called their birthday. It is simply their day of birth. But what do we call the day a mother is born? Just as significant as a child being born is the metamorphosis that occurs when a woman becomes mom. It’s empowering, humbling, and inspiring. Whether that baby is born from your womb or another’s, the moment you are mom is a dividing line in your life. Suddenly, your heart stops beating for one and becomes intertwined with another.

“Mothers and their children are in a category all their own. There’s no bond so strong in the entire world. No love so instantaneous and forgiving.”
― Gail Tsukiyama

A dear friend sends her mother flowers on her own birthday every year. Yes, she gives gifts for her mother’s day of birth, but she recognizes that her own birthday is less about her and more about her mom. Now that I’m a mother I see the significance and the absolute love in her gesture.

This newborn photography session permitted to capture three generations. Indeed, the day a new mother is born, a new grandmother is born. There’s something brilliant about the bond that opens between mothers and their children when their children become parents. It’s an understanding and a grace they never had before. They reflect in each other’s eyes more than ever (if only for a moment).

It’s a privilege to watch these moments unfold, and be selected as your Seattle Newborn Photographer. I love telling the story of your early days at home with your new baby. How you caressed and stared at them endlessly will be captured forever. My hope is that one look will bring the moments, the smells, the sensations flooding back to you years from now.
