An Argument for On Location Photography

Studio photography has plenty of perks. It’s lovely, and easily manipulated. The photographer can control everything from lighting to climate to background. Clients can swap wardrobes with ease, and tend to children’s needs quickly. Yes, studio photography is, if nothing else, convenient.

But here in lies the rub. We have no attachments to a studio. No memories, no mental time stamps of what we did and who we did it with, live in a studio. Though bathrooms are easily accessible, kids tend to be a little uneasy in a studio with its bright lights and props. For all of these reasons and more, I’m a huge advocate for on location photography (if you couldn’t tell already.) I believe in its power to tell a story, to capture memories, and to hold the essence and spirit of the subjects in the moment they were taken.

This session is the perfect example why on location photography is superior in just about every way. (My bias is showing again.) The scenery is absolutely, 100% unique to this family. Memories live and breathe here. Hugs and kisses were shared. Vows were exchanged, commitments were made, and love grew strong.

These photos were taken on Vashon Island where this stunning, growing family has called home for generations. The Island holds such sweet, last memories for them. It’s the place they were married, and call home. It is here they have chosen to plant strong roots, and begin a new chapter of their life in a new home. On location photography was such a wise choice for this beautiful family. Now, and forever, they will have tangible memories of this time, this place, like unique fingerprints that map a moment in their lives.

On location photography is also an amazing choice for Maternity Photography. You can make it casual, loving, and inclusive of your extended family. Do what comes naturally to you. Play. Smile. Live. You’ll reap the rewards in the final product.

I do adore on location photography, and this session in particular is evidence of why.
