You know what I know absolutely for sure about parenting? Nothing, really. I know for sure that I am practicing on you. I know for sure you are experiencing all of my growing pains. I know for sure I am probably going to send you to years of therapy for my missteps. I know for sure you and I are learning a lot together.
What I Know
I did not know I would be doing this alone. I did not know that you would be going back and forth to two different homes. I’m so sorry for this. I did not plan it this way. Though I do not regret a thing. You are the best thing we ever did together.
What I Can Promise
One thing I can and will promise you. I will always be here for you. I will always show up. I will hold you when you tell me you don’t want to be my friend anymore. When you tell me you hate me, I will love you harder. I will be your fiercest cheerleader in life and stand by your side. I will embarrass you in front of your friends with my kisses and adoration for you. I will drive you crazy with wanting to keep you safe.
What I Hope
What I hope to give you above all else are words of affirmation that light up your mind with all of the possibilities life will hold for you. An inner voice that is strong and kind. Perseverance to fight for what your heart and gut tell you is right. Gentleness and compassion so that you are able to lift up those around you.
I am your Mom, and I am practicing being one, on you. Thank you for this honor.
Henley, you are my soul walking outside my body every day. You are so wanted.
