A Mean World
Seattle Newborn Photographer
It goes without saying that we live in a mean world. I don’t need to remind you that the world is filled with cruel, hateful people. It’s everywhere. It’s inescapable. As a Seattle Newborn Photographer, it’s my job to capture joy, beauty, happiness, and new beginnings. I see the work of my colleagues whose job it is to capture despair, turmoil, and even hatred; I do not envy them. Instead, I’m able to view the world through the lens of a child.
My friend’s son recently started preschool. His mom asked him if he made any friends, and he lamented that one child was mean to him. She could feel herself buck up, ready to squash this kid’s punk attitude. Instead, she found her inner zen and said, “How so?” Her child responded very matter-of-factly, “Well, I was telling him that killer whales are also orcas but they’re dolphins, too, and he didn’t believe me.”
You can’t help but laugh at his innocence. To a four-year-old, mean is a raised voice, or another child not listening or believing the words they say. In all truth, meanness does originate from those things- raised voices, lack of communication, and a violation of trust. In those moments, it’s imperative to teach our children to rise above. To be concerned with their truth, and not whether or not someone believes them. To be kind to the other children even when they’re mean to them because love is the answer.
Cheers to the parents out there getting it right. Cheers to the parents teaching their children the hard answers to life’s toughest questions. Cheers to the parents teaching their kids kindness and love.
